See Why Your Skin Might Be Itchy
We often get those itches and even just thinking of it can cause it. Countless factors could be responsible for your itchy skin, but it often won’t just stop! You need to identify the reasons behind it so let’s try getting to the bottom of it.
Causes of itchy skin
Itching of the skin is known as ‘PRURITUS,’ and about 11% of the population is going through it. Some of the factors can be eczema, skin dryness, bug attacks, poisonous ivy, and chickenpox. There are times every part of your body will itch or a particular spot. The duration for itchy skin vary, it may be for weeks or months. Symptoms may include discoloration, bumps, scaly skin or rashes.
If you have this dermatological problem, don’t panic, just check this list for possible causes and treatments.
Skin that is dry
Dry skin rarely has a rash, and it’s rampant among smokers, those who suntan for hours, aged people and people who use excessive skin care materials. Dry skin is mainly found during the winter period and in environments that are arid in nature.
Treatments
Moisten your body at least 3 to 4 times per day. Don’t spend long hours while bathing or taking your shower; it may further make your skin to dry up. Always use hydrocortisone OTC cream, with 1% measurement. However, if no improvement is observed, consult your dermatologist who might recommend antihistamine drug and steroid lotion.
Atopic dermatitis
In atopic dermatitis, eczema is the parent disease that has atopic dermatitis as a secondary form. This disease can come in the form of sapped, red or peevish skin. In case it turns out to be contaminated, you are likely to see small bumps filled with fluid that can burst and squeeze.
Treatments
Main advice from medical experts like Nishit Patel, an associate professor in dermatology at Morsani College of Medicine, Florida, is to pick your skin care cosmetics such as bathing soaps wisely, then do away with scented products. Also, avoid dry bedspreads, rough fabrics, and hot water bathing because they can contribute to the problem. You can also try steroids.
Allergic dermatitis
Just as the name implies, allergic dermatitis is a rash that occurs when your skin touches a thing unfriendly to its nature, such as a perfume, chemical, paint, or cotton. Dr. Nishit also described it as something similar to eczema. Other symptoms may be inflammation, swollen skin or boils which usually burst open and ooze pus.
Treatments
You can handle less serious cases with moisturizing products and an OTC antihistamine and corticosteroid. Consult your doctor in case your ailment is very serious with an enormous attack of rash. Try to identify the things that are sensitive to your skin and do well to avoid them.
Kidney disease
Severe kidney disorder is another contributory factor to skin problems. In such cases, the itching usually becomes escalated during the night, and it affects big parts of the body. Over 40% of finish-stage renal disorder patients may experience itchy skin. You can treat it with enough moisturizing and ensure that your kidney disease is being well treated.
Liver disease
The liver helps to clean off toxins from the body. If there is any breakdown in liver operations, however, itchy skin is bound to occur. Itching can be simple or serious, expanded or restrained to some parts of the body like the palms or feet soles. Expect worse itching when your period is about to start, during the night or when you are stressed.
Treatments
Use adequate moisturizers and take warm showers. Also, consult your doctor when the case is more complicated.
Multiple sclerosis
Nerve mishaps are usually the cause of skin itching. The rash is absent so detecting the origin is impossible. Sometimes, MS patients can get infected with other skin problems such as insect attacks and psoriasis. Nerve-target treatments are usually adopted to handle dysesthetic and other MS classes. you can treat it by using anticonvulsants and antidepressants.
Cancer
Although not common, blood cancer may be a pointer to skin itching. For example, polycythemia vera attacks marrows of bones. Itching can start after a warm shower, and symptoms include weakness, headaches, and dizziness.
Treatments
Fix an appointment with your physician if your skin itches during your cancer procedures. It may be caused by some of the cancer drugs you are using.
Medications
Some medications cause itching and symptoms may bring eczema related dry skin. Examples of such drugs are pain-relieving drugs, sulfa pills, antibiotics, and some drugs used by psychiatric patients.
Treatments
In case you use some of the drugs above and your skin itches, as a result, consult your doctor and discuss the possibility of getting replacements for the drugs. However, use antihistamines and skincare balms in case your drugs cannot be replaced for you.
