The Difference Between Cosmetic Surgery And Plastic Surgery
Quite a few people believe cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery are the same with no difference between the procedures. These people are not isolated in their thinking because quite a few plastic surgeons concentrate on the practice of cosmetic surgery. Therefore the terms are often interchanged between the two procedures.
People are required to make an attempt to understand that the two procedures are technically not the same. These two procedures cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery are specialized but they are definitely not the same. Let us look at the differences between the two.
The Objectives Of Cosmetic Surgery And Plastic Surgery
Cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery both deal with making improvements to the patient’s body but the training, research and the objectives of individual patient outcomes are entirely different.
Cosmetic Surgery Focuses on Improving Appearance
- Procedures of cosmetic surgery include the following:
- Facial contouring including rhinoplasty, cheek or chin enhancement.
- Body contouring including tummy tuck, liposuction, gynecomastia treatment.
- Breast enhancement, augmentation, and lift reduction.
- Facial rejuvenation including facelift brow lift and eyelid lift.
- Skin rejuvenation such as laser surfacing, Botox and filler treatments.
Plastic Surgery Focuses on Repairing Defects For the Reconstruction Of Normal Functions And Appearance
Plastic Surgery has been this function as a surgical procedure which is dedicated to the reconstruction of facial and defects in the body because of birth disorders. It can also correct defects from any trauma, disease, and burns. The objective of plastic surgery is to rectify dysfunctional areas within the body and the nature of the procedure is reconstructive. Quite a few plastic surgeons prefer to obtain additional training in order to perform cosmetic surgery along with their chosen discipline but the primary training the receive is for reconstructive plastic surgery.
The American Society Of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons change its name to the American Society Of Plastic Surgeons In 1999 strongly to communicate to the people that the professionals managing plastic and reconstructive procedures are one and the same.
Here are a few examples of procedures of plastic surgery:
- Breast reconstruction.
- Burn repair surgery.
- Lower extremity reconstruction.
- Surgery of the hands.
- Scar revision surgery.
The Training For Cosmetic Surgeons And Plastic Surgeons Is Different
The training needed by plastic surgeons must be completed in a general surgery residency along with another two years in the Department of plastic surgery. The residency programs for plastic surgery may also include cosmetic surgery as a part of the surgeon’s training but generally, it does not include the training needed on every cosmetic procedure.
The training needed by cosmetic surgeons is completed after residency training. No residency programs are presently available within the United States that are devoted exclusively to cosmetic surgery. This reason has prompted cosmetic surgeons to obtain training and experience after completing their residency training. They usually complete this requirement by going a post-residency fellowship.
Every surgeon who is board certified by the American Board Of Cosmetic Surgery should have completed a one-year fellowship training solely in cosmetic surgery when the receipt all the training needed for cosmetic surgery procedures of the body, face and the breasts apart from cosmetic treatments of the nonsurgical variety and are required to perform a minimum of 300 individual cosmetic surgery procedures.
The differences mentioned above should give people a better idea about the differences between cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery. They will be in a better position to choose a specialist for themselves if they are in need to go through any of the procedures which may be conducted by a plastic surgeon or a cosmetic surgeon.
