Buying a healthy food is always a tough job when you are on tight budget. You often skip a lot of nutritional food items and end up choosing anything that is cheap and will fill your tummy. However, with this money saving ways will have you within budget and eating wholesome foods.

Here are some clever tips to help you eat healthy while staying on budget.

1. Plan Your Meals

Planning is always essential when it’s about to saving money at the grocery store. Use one day every week to make a plan for your meals for the coming week. Then, jot down the grocery list. Also, scan your fridge to see what all you already have.

Many times there is a lot of food hidden in the refrigerator of cupboards that can be used. Only plan to purchase what you are going to need, to prevent any wastage.

3. Cook at Home

Cooking at home is always cheaper as compared to eating out. Develop a habit of cooking at home, instead of going out for meals. In general, you can feed a family of 4 for the same price as ordering food for one or two individuals at the restaurant. By cooking yourself, you also know exactly what is all in your food.

4. Cook Large Meals and Use The Leftovers

Cooking large portions can save both money and time. The leftover meals can also be eaten at lunch. Some other recipes can be frozen in single meal sizes so that it can be enjoyed later on.

With leftovers, you make very good stir-fries, stews, salads, wraps, and burritos. Such foods are great for people who are on a budget.

5. Don’t Shop When You’re Hungry

If you visit the grocery store in a hungry state, then you are more likely to deviate from your grocery list and would buy anything based on impulse.

When you are hungry, you will often crave for foods that are not good for your budget as well as for your body.

Instead, pick pieces of fruit, and yogurt or any other healthy snack before you let yourself get inside the store.

6. Buy Whole Foods

Some food items are far cheaper as compared to the processed ones.

For instance, a block of cheese is far cheaper as compared to shredded cheese and the canned beans are much cheaper than the refried ones.

Whole grains, such as brown rice or oats, are also comparatively cheaper in per serving than the more processed ones.

The less processed foods are often sold in a large amount, and yields more servings per pack.

7. Buy Generic Brands

Most stores deliver generic brands for most products.

For all food manufacturers, it is mandatory to follow standards to ensure the safe foods. Generic brands have the same quality as that of other brands, but with a cheaper price tag.

But don’t forget to go through the ingredients lists to ensure that you are not getting the product of lower quality in the name of generic brands.
