Meghan Apparently Wanted a Home Birth for her Baby, but Things Didn’t Go as Planned!

With world-wide news covering this news every day, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry finally welcomed Baby Sussex. Meghan desired to have a home birth, but being a week overdue, she was removed from her residence in secrecy and taken to a London hospital, where she gave birth. It was so secretive that even senior royals weren’t informed.

Whether birth was induced is unclear, but Meghan apparently stayed overnight before her baby was born at 5:26 a.m. on May 6, 2019. It was reported that Meghan wanted a home birth, although willing to go to the hospital if needed for the baby. The couple had hoped for an all-female doula-led delivery, right at their Frogmore Cottage home at the Windsor Estate. But with Meghan becoming more overdue, that did not happen.

Apparently some of the world’s leading ob-gyn specialists weren’t optimistic about Meghan having a home birth. At a recent meeting in Nashville of ACOG members (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists), some doctors reportedly trashed Meghan and Harry’s home birth wishes in view of her first birth at 37. The skepticism was largely because of her age, (she was 37 when she gave birth) and Meghan’s pregnancy is classified as a high-risk pregnancy, according to the NICHD (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development,) as is any pregnancy for woman 35 or older.

The NICHD and ACOG recommend against home births. That’s only in the United States. In the United Kingdom, home births are considered safer. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which provides childbirth guidelines in the UK, confirms home births as beneficial, for about 50% of low-risk births, and permits high-risk births at home, provided the mother’s maternal age is the only factor.

Luckily, everything has worked out well for Meghan and Baby Sussex. The British royal family is absolutely thrilled that both baby and mum are healthy, if Prince Harry’s endearing reaction to becoming a new dad gives any indication, home birth or not.
